DUO SEMAPHORE

Rachael Hutchings & Hukum Singh Khalsa

Connecting through four hand piano music

Our collaboration began about five years ago, and the evolution has been strange and exciting. We’ve discovered so much by working together, and we’ve grown so much because of our different strengths and perspectives. We’ve found shared values that shape what we do:

CONNECTION: Connecting with our audiences is what makes all the work and anxiety worthwhile. We believe that music can connect people in a uniquely human, flawed, beautiful way.

COMMUNITY: The long tradition of four hand piano music centers community; music and society serve each other, locked like gears.

COLLABORATION: So far, we’ve collaborated with an actor, a video artist, and a poet for our multimedia recitals. Collaborating with other artists energizes us and gives audiences more ways to connect with the music.

SUNDRIES: Healing, exploring, learning, balancing, humor; somatic, sensual, sensuous, modern; circus! re-inventing what a concert can be, fauvism, unruliness

Why “Duo Semaphore”?

We searched for a name that represented us, but was more distinctive than “Duo Hutchings-Khalsa.” Duo Semaphore evokes urgency, purpose, and things meaning other things. Also, we just liked the sound of it.

Who is Duo Semaphore’s audience?

We’re lucky to have a diverse audience.  Our audience has included music lovers of all kinds, a mural artist, chefs, poets, other musicians, comedians, actors, academics, painters, children, students, psychologists, literary types, kindred spirits/misfits, and doctors.
